Hey Vanikin, you have a very thorough plan in place to research the impact of after school activities. I think it is great that you have surveys in place throughout the year to get feedback from students, parents and teachers. This will give you the opportunity to make revisions to the program and your plan as the process unfolds. I am curious as to what types of activities the after school program will offer. Will these be programs that you select based on research, teacher input or programs that are already in place (e.g., sports, enrichment programs, clubs, etc.)? I am also curious as to how you will go about picking the participants. Will these be students with past discipline issues or will it be more of a random selection? It will be interesting to see your research unfold. Best of luck!
ReplyDeleteTHe programs will be research and teacher based. THroughout the year I will get input from parents and students on the different types of activities they will like to do. Right now I will be using my classroom students as a pilot group. This has already been okayed by the principal. I am not sure of the students in my class from next year yet, but I will be monitoring grades and discipline issues, during the program in the afternoon and those same issues during a normal school day.
Deletehello Vanikin,
ReplyDeleteI am interested to see what results you get from your surveys. But like Keith, what criteria will you use to pick the students and what kinds of activities will you offer for the after school program? Will it be stuff for the kids to unwind or will it be extra practice in the core areas? My favorite question: will there be food/snacks provided? I am interested to see what becomes of your action research plan in the months ahead.
Good luck,
sonya p.
My principal and I have already chosen to use the students in my class as a pilot. This will make it easier for me to monitor the students. I have not really planned out the activities yet, but there will be homework help, excercise, computer enrichment activities, and arts &crafts.
DeleteTo your question about snacks...yes there will be snacks and drinks provided for the kids :)
Van,
DeleteJust reading...this is great. and you got a lot of comments to choose from!!!
You go girl!!!
sonya
This is a great plan with good detail. I am curious how you will choose students for the after school program. Will this be optional to attend or are you looking for certain students? Are you considering students with different SES or is that part of the research? How many faculty would participate and might this cause an issue with funding? Just some thoughts to consider. Good luck with your plan!
ReplyDeleteMy principal and I have already chosen to use the students in my class as a pilot. This will make it easier for me to monitor the students. II will be accepting up to 25 students so if some of my students can not attend we will then be choosing students with discipline problems to participate in the program. Funding is definitely a problem, so right now I will be funding the program ,but my school principal and I have been looking into grants. Right now I am not sure if faculty will participate, but since I am funding the program. The program will run once a week or twice a month.
DeleteLove this research project! As an elementary teacher who has had students go to after school programs I've wondered if there is a direct impact from those programs and their behavior. Something to consider: Our school offers two programs, the YMCA and AlphaBest. The teachers on my campus have noticed a "trend"...majority of the students that are considered discipline problems in the class go to the YMCA program after school compared to those that attend AlphaBest. I will say that the YMCA is not as structured and don't offer as many "academic" activities as AlphaBest. So maybe you can look at the differences in student behavior between programs IF the campus you are looking at has more than one program available... Looking forward to reading and following your findings!
ReplyDeleteRight now our campus has absolutely no after school activities for students. With funding being a major problem, I have been looking into grants and community members to try to get a program started. THank you for the input and I will be sure to look at both programs when doing my research.
DeleteGreat looking plan! I especially like that you are focusing on a project that takes place after school. Kids these days need good, positive activities with peers that serve as good role models. What a huge opportunity for you to really make a difference! I can't wait to follow along...
ReplyDeleteTHank you Bridgett :)
DeleteExactly what I was thinking! You really will make a difference to these kids. Hopefully you can reach out to parents and community members that will be willing to help out with the funding.
DeleteTHank you Kristyn. I have already gotten a few parents involved that are willing to volunteer their time so that more students can participate :) If this year goes good, we can then involve even more students next year :)
DeleteVanikin, your plan is highly detailed and allows you to get feedback from a variety of sources (teachers, parents, and students). I would also suggest that you ask your principal and any assistants at your school to give you any feedback from their observations about the program at various points in the year. Sometimes they have different perspectives since they deal with discipline issues and contact parents daily. Best of luck!
ReplyDeleteThank you for that suggestion. I have been talking to my principal about that alot. We just got done talking about how I will be making sure that everything is sent to him in detail about the program. I will be sure to make sure I include them in my plan to make sure that I have documentation of their input. Thank you:)
DeleteYou will have a huge support group with this plan. All of your steps will cover more than enough to get the results you want. Getting more people involved will give you better end results. I love your plan.
ReplyDeleteThank you Carsen.
DeleteI have actually had great support from the faculty and parents of some of the future participants. At this moment we will only be accepting 25 students, but I am hoping that next year I will have enough support and funding to open the program up to the entire school.
Vanikin, My first job in education was as a magnet school coordinator. I implemented a very successful afterschool program and I have some very good information and websites that may be helpful in your research project. It may not answer any questions but it may open up some ideas for your plan.
ReplyDeleteWilliam,
DeleteThank you so much, I would love the information :) I was so excited when I was able to pick my research topic, because an afterschool program was the very first thing I thought of. It has kind of been an obsession of mine forever, and since I grew up in the town I was teaching in, it is something that I would like to do to help my community. I will be emailing you soon :)
Thanks again :)
Vanikin, I think you will see very positive results with this type of after school program. I taught at one school that had an extended day program which turned into free babysitting. We struggled with the students that stayed because it was no longer that structured classroom environment and found behavior problems to be constant. I like how your are leaning towards this being a reward or incentive program rather than just because. I agree with the other comments about our youth needing positive places to be after school. In secondary grade levels some students are able to use athletics as their getaway from what is going on at home, but often times our younger students do not have that escape. I think that if the students get a chance at this positive after school experience they will defiantly want to be invited back. Good luck with your research and thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThank you NIcole :)
